Worcester’s junior swimmers began 2014 in fine style with a strong second place at a friendly gala at Redditch on Saturday 4th January. A permanent fixture in the Club’s calendar, it was as always highly competitive and suggests that this year’s 12/u team will be a force to be reckoned with!
As usual, the Club’s slightly older swimmers excelled… with the 11/u and 12/u girls proving unbeatable in the Relays, winning both the Medley & Freestyle events. There were also excellent individual wins for Leyla Tayar (11/u Butterfly), Olivia Fletcher (11/u Backstroke and Freestyle) and Catrin Carter (12/u Freestyle) plus strong second place finishes for Lottie Atkinson (11/u Breaststroke) and Amy Owens (12u Butterfly and Breaststroke).
However, the performances of the younger swimmers was extremely encouraging too.
Making their debuts in the 9-year old age group, Aimee Monks (1st Freestyle, 2nd Backstroke), Zoe Pye (3rd Breaststroke) and Lydia Cooper (3rd Butterfly) all swam beautifully…with Daniella Moore and Alice Atkinson joining Aimee and Lydia for a splendid 2nd in the Medley Relay.
In the 10’s, Isabella Trow proved the Club’s most successful swimmer with two 1st places in the Butterfly and Backstroke…and with the excellent Georgia Hill, Megan Bury and Rosie Wikeley earned valuable points for the team with 2nd place in both Relays.
Oddly the only Boy to record an individual win was Josh Bennett in the 12/u 50m Backstroke though the 11/u boys Medley Relay team of Matthew Richards, Baeli Fern, Sam Doyle and Isaac Shepherd showed real class and team spirit to win.
The boys racked up lots of 2nd places including some mighty swims from George Glover (2nd 10/u Breaststroke), Alex Rosser-Barnett (10/u Backstroke), Sam Doyle (11/u Backstroke) and Matthew Richards (11/u Freestyle)
